Biography

Paula Schenck is part of the Section of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Her interests are focused on understanding the linkages between environment and health, indoor environmental concerns in schools, homes and office buildings, and addressing health disparities in urban populations by promoting improvement in environmental quality. Her research activities have included epidemiological survey- design and implementation. Previous to her association with UConn, Paula was a consultant for 20 years, and held positions with some of the premier environmental companies in the industry. She was Vice President of TRC Companies Inc in Windsor, Connecticut, a project manager and marketing manager with Environmental Research & Technology, Inc, in Concord, Massachusetts and Atlanta, Georgia, and director of business development with The Earth Technology Corporation in Seattle, Washington. Paula received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Simmons College, Boston, Massachusetts, and earned a Masters in Public Health from the University of Connecticut.

As Clinical Instructor in the UCHC Department of Community Medicine and Health Care Ms Schenck lectures regularly on environmental health/ air quality, and is a seminar leader on asthma and environment in the Health and Human Development Course in the medical school. She has consulted widely to government and industry on issues involving environmental awareness, regulatory compliance, and public health and disease prevention. She is apart of the CT Asthma Plan task force, co-chairing the environmental committee and was an invited member of a Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering Committee on Indoor Air Quality in Connecticut Schools. She co-chairs Hartford’s Asthma Call to Action, a broad-based organization representing community, private sector, medical and agency personnel, and is an active participant in Connecticut Schools Resource Team, a multi-agency group that guides schools in initiating EPA’s Tools for Schools program. She is a member of the ANSI (American National Standards Institute) Green Building Initiative Standards Development Committee.

Ms. Schenck develops workshops for health providers and public health officials on addressing environmental influences on health in clinical settings. She is a co-author of the Guidance for Clinicians on the Recognition and Management of Health Effects Related to Mold Exposure and Moisture Indoors (http://oehc.uchc.edu/images/PDFs/MOLD%20GUIDE.pdf) developed with support from the US Environmental Protection Agency.
