Surveillance Clinic

The Surveillance Clinic of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (DOEM) is a valuable resource for public health agencies at the local, state, and national level. The Division plays a critical role in risk assessment and communication for local municipalities and communities confronting serious environmental health crises.

Local health directors rely on the DOEM Surveillance Clinic for advice and consultation when confronted with potential workplace outbreaks of disease. Connecticut OSHA may request advice from the Division to interpret the significance of symptoms among workers at facilities undergoing evaluation. Annually, the Division interprets trends in surveillance data from the state Department of Public Health and produces an analytical report for the Workers' Compensation Commission. The Division has also been involved in both occupational and community health risk assessments and research projects in collaboration with national public health agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).

The DOEM has been serving state employees for the past 10 years offering surveillance for all DEP workers, including the first responders to hazardous materials incidents, the Division of Forestry workers with the wild fire fighters program, and the Department of Consumer Protection. Additionally, the clinic provides surveillance for DPH inspectors involved in the Lead Abatement Program. DOC and DCF workers frequently use our services for evaluation and treatment after a needle stick injury or other blood exposures and Fitness for Duty assessments.

Significant contributions of the DOEM toward the surveillance of occupational and environmental illness and injury across Connecticut have provided substantial data collection and analysis to the State. Adequate surveillance provides substratum for timely and effective intervention services, many of which are also provided by the DOEM.
