Occupational Reproductive Hazards Clinic
The Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, in partnership with the Connecticut Pregnancy Exposure Information Service (CPEIS) provides clinical evaluations and expertise in reducing or preventing workplace exposures that may affect fertility, maternal health, pregnancy, and fetal development.
Individuals who are pregnant or are considering a pregnancy and who have concerns or questions about occupational exposures can contact the CPEIS's telephone Riskline, which can then initiate a more thorough evaluation, including referral to the occupational medicine clinic. A pregnancy exposure assessment may include clinical assessment by a physician, evaluation by an industrial hygienist, and review of epidemiologic and toxicologic databases for information on the reproductive hazards of the individual's workplace.
In some instances, with the permission of the patient, the worksite can be contacted and a site visit arranged to evaluate processes and materials, targeted toward any potential reproductive hazards that may be present. If the workplace can provide relevant information, such as air sampling, or the results of other workplace audits, these also can be reviewed.
The collaboration between the Division and the CPEIS can provide workers with an individualized risk assessment and hazard evaluation. Recommendations can be made to the worker, her workplace and her physician, obstetrician, or midwife, so that exposures of concern can be reduced, mitigated, or eliminated. Assessment of previous exposures and their potential for adverse pregnancy outcomes, along with additional recommendations for prenatal evaluation and testing may also be provided.
